Dumbo the Lonely Elephant..

The staff at Phalaborwa Coper Mine in South Africa became quick heroes when they rescued a baby elephant calf who was stuck in a well. Barcroft TV reports that the calf, named Amanzi, which means “water” in Zulu, fell into the trap and sadly, his herd left him behind.

Luckily, once the workers spotted the little one, they swooped in to help. After freeing Amanzi, they attempted to reintroduce him to nearby elephant herds, however, this was unsuccessful. Unable to leave this little one all alone, they called in an emergency rescue team to take Amanzi to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) for rehabilitation.

When he arrived at HESC, the young elephant was severely dehydrated and in very bad shape. Dr. Rogers and Dr. Michelle Henly have worked tirelessly to rehabilitate the elephant calf. While Amanzi remains in critical care, the team is still hopeful: “Although Amanzi’s future is still unclear, we will do our utmost best to ensure his survival.”

You can help Amanzi recover by making a donation to HESC.
