Pit bulls as police dogs

Home / News / Europe / Pit bulls as police dogs
In the US, nearly a million of pit bulls are euthanized each year. Many Americans and French associations working every day to defend these dogs. This is particularly the case of the association Animal Farm Foundation who wants to give a positive image to the pit bulls across the United States. This association created in 1985, is located in Dutchess, New York State, has made numerous awareness campaigns. Their operation saves many dogs while trying to find them a new home.

Animal Farm Foundation decided some time ago to build a partnership with the Universal K9 organization, which specialize in the training and mentoring of future police dogs. Together they have built a successful program, which is trains Pit bulls from rescue organization to become police dogs. While most police dogs are German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois shepherds, nine of them are now Pit bulls.

This initiative has positive effects for both sides. Dogs saved by this program avoid euthanasia and “get a purpose” while police departments are saving money because they don’t have to buy from dog breeders, as well as getting better equipment in the form of better dogs for their units.

Tell us what do you think about this initiative?
