Okay, the search for land for Elephant Haven continued…
We even went to Tuscany, Italia to see some land but it
was too expensive to find a big piece of land.
Because we had maybe found an interesting land, we went
back to France for a couple of days to visit some potential
land. We stayed overnight on a working sheep farm and the
sister of the owner said to us that that farm was also for sale.
To make a long story short, it was a really nice land and very important:
the local Mayor was very enthusiastic about the project!
So we made an agreement for that land.
We decided to make one of the biggest steps in our life and l
eave our life in Belgium behind for go to France for find Elephant Haven.
Which also means quitting our job in the zoo after more than 20 years.
Some family members were afraid of this decision, but we were convinced
that it was time to move to France. This was the best thing to do for the project.
All our furniture, books, personal belongings and our “sweet” cat Oz went to France.
Thanks to my colleague Bart who drove his van and trailer and the Land Rover loaded
we were off to Oradour-sur-Vayres to start Elephant Haven.
We moved in into a little gîte where we had internet and start working to fundraise
for the land.
We had until April 2015 to get the money in for the land otherwise
we had to go on look for new land.
Time was flying by, we did some presentations for the Mayor etc. and
we had a good support from all the local people who loved the project.
But the most important thing was not happening, we had some nice
donations but the land was unfortunately to expensive to buy…
So April was coming very very fast and we were preparing to look for other land.
To be continued.
