Residents recently organized a free vaccination program for poor people in their community with a dog. A fund-raising campaign was also launched to support the initiative.
So far, more than 50 dogs have been vaccinated with this disease. Each vaccine costs about 2,000 Rs. ($40CDN) and is sponsored by residents and a private veterinarian, Dr. Nagesh Reddy.
Dog lovers say that the canine disease is serious and that the BBMP (residents and the municipal corporation of Bangalore) must take it into consideration.
Dr. Nagesh Reddy said that “several dogs with symptoms of the disease are spotted throughout the city. If left untreated, it can be fatal for them. I have practiced for the last 15 years, but I have observed that there has been an increase this year compared to the previous ones.”
According to the veterinarian, about 40% of stray dogs, including dogs living in a family, are affected by the disease. This virus spreads from one dog to another through the air or through water. That’s why the numbers have exploded.
